On Tuesday, Dr. Chris Heinrich joined Caltech postdocs for a conversation over coffee in the Little Chandler. First he gave a brief introduction about his career, going from his Ph.D. to founding startups and being employed in a tech company. The postdocs were particularly interested in his know-how as a founder so Chris shared his experiences with different startups: He talked about the obstacles and opportunities and whether or not a business plan may be useful. Then Chris talked about his current employment at Ubiquity6 Inc., where he works as a computer vision engineer. He told the postdocs about the daily routine inside a tech company like using agile methods or working remotely. In conclusion, Chris encouraged postdocs to be open for career options outside their specific field since a highly qualified academic background entails skills which are valuable in all kind of companies. He himself switched from a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics to working as a computer vision engineer.

Coffee and career is a frequent event where postdocs and graduate students meet professionals from various fields: In an informal setting the professional gives insight in his/her background and answers questions. Thus Postdocs gain an impression of possible career paths over a cup of coffee.
